Is high art a thing of the past? Not if you know where to look for it! In this article, you will learn about a place where culture takes on a different dimension.
Gran Teatre del Liceu is one of the most important symbols of Barcelona. This beautiful opera house was opened in 1847 and, in terms of acoustics, was already considered one of the best such places in Europe, and even in the world. Importantly, the theater building was built with funds from private sponsors gathered in the Association for the Liceu Theater.
The private initiative brought the expected harvest: Gran Teatre del Liceu is still an important point on the cultural map of Barcelona, and through decades of existence, the theater has become a silent witness to numerous changes and twists in the history of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is here that history has a chance to meet art, and we can still listen to the unique story that the Barcelona theater has been telling for over 170 years.
It is worth knowing, however, that only the facade, the main hall, and a fragment of the foyer have survived from the historical building of the Teatre del Liceu. The remaining parts of the theater were irrevocably destroyed: a fire consumed the building in 1861. In the second fire, in 1994, further parts of the building were damaged. Despite this, Liceu still delights and attracts not only tourists but also music lovers from all over the world.
Visiting the Gran Teatre del Liceu
Just as opera performances at the Gran Teatre del Liceu are a real feast for the ears, visiting this temple of culture allows you to saturate your eyes with beautiful views. We will be convinced of this already at the entrance because even the corridor leading to the key parts of the opera makes an impression.
What delights the most is the 20-meter-high main hall of the Liceu. There are seats for nearly 2,300 viewers here! Some of the seats are also located on the five-level balcony. Another interesting part of the Gran Teatre del Liceu is the Mirror Hall (Spanish: Salón de los espejos). It will probably come as no surprise if I say that this room is full of mirrors?

In addition to them, the opera is also decorated with paintings by Josep Mestres Cabanes (copies of the original works by Joseb Mirabent, which were burned in the fire). To see them, however, you have to look up because they are not on the walls, but on the ceiling of this room.
GOOD TO KNOW: When visiting the Gran Teatre del Liceu, it is also worth taking a look at the observation deck. It is true that you cannot see such a beautiful panorama of Barcelona from it as from Montjuïc or Tibidabo hills, but it still allows you to look at a fragment of this city from a slightly different perspective.
